Parent-Child Mother Goose Program

Support for Somali mothers and children

Two teenagers wearing embroidered dresses and headscarvesThe Somali Parent-Child Mother Goose Program is a group experience for parents and their young children.  It fosters positive parent–child attachment through the use of rhymes, chants, songs and stories to enhance positive parenting skills and to build peer and community supports.

Two teachers from the Somali community run the program in both English and Somali. Somali and English oral rhymes, songs and stories are used, as well as translations from one language to another.

“The reason I come to the [Mother Goose] program is because I learn new things. I have children, and I’m so happy that I’m learning new things and that when my children go to school, they know Mother Goose and can sing. They’re happy, and I’m happy to come every Tuesday. Thank you so much.”

“It is important because many [Somali women] don’t have another program like Mother Goose so they stay home… and are mainly isolated. So, [with Mother Goose] they can bring their children and meet other parents, to learn about the program and how they can [achieve] success for their children and to join with the Canadian culture.”
